John R. Shook

Dr. John R. Shook is Associate Professor of Philosophy at Bowie State University in Maryland. He publishes on science and naturalism, American intellectual history and pragmatism, and intersections of technology, ethics, and policy, with over twenty books and one hundred journal articles and chapters. Shook has been a professor at Oklahoma State University and the University at Buffalo before coming to D.C. as a Visiting Fellow of the Institute for Philosophy and Public Policy at George Mason University in Virginia, and an Associate Fellow at the Center for Neurotechnology Studies, Potomac Institute for Public Policy in Virginia. He was general editor of The Dictionary of Modern American Philosophers, 4 vols. (2005) and The Dictionary of Early American Philosophers, 2 vols. (2012), and he also edited Historical Essays in 20th-Century American Philosophy (2015) and The Bloomsbury Encyclopedia of Philosophers in America (2016). Recent books authored include Systematic Atheology (2018) and Pragmatism (2023).
